Enhancing Your Workout Routine with Marijuana

When you think of the activities that benefit from marijuana, you probably don’t think about exercise. But some people – many of whom are serious athletes and researchers – will tell you there’s a marijuana fitness craze coming your way.

While working out high on weed probably isn’t going to be one of the classes offered at your local gym anytime soon, the number of people who say weed and exercise are a match made in heaven seems to be going up every day.

Keep reading to learn more about how you can enhance your workout routine by using marijuana.

Runner’s High

Even if you don’t love going on long runs, chances are you’ve heard about the runner’s high phenomenon. Often associated with a release of endorphins, using cannabis may be able to recreate a similar effect during exercise, even if the user isn’t doing heavy cardio.

According to Andrea Giuffirda, an associate professor at the University of Texas Health Center, studies show people running or jogging on a treadmill show higher levels of endocannabinoids naturally, which act similarly to endorphins in the brain.

When trying to make it through a longer run, many people feel a greater sense of reward and find it’s easier to push through the discomfort to meet their goal after using cannabis.

Less Pain, More Focus

For many people, getting through an intense workout is a challenge every time they hit the gym. According to Mark Ware, a McGill University professor, THC may be able to help athletes get through workouts by improving focus and increasing endurance.

Long-known in the medical community for being able to reduce pain, using marijuana before exercise also may be able to help people push through moderate physical pain. This could be a major benefit for average Joes and athletes alike looking to trainer harder.

Marijuana is Not for Everyone

Some people enjoy working out after using a little bit of marijuana, either in edible or smoked form. That doesn’t mean weed is right for everyone or that everyone with a gym membership should get high before their workout.

Muscle memory often takes hold for some people when they’re working out, allowing them to feel a bit more locked in to their routine. For others, though, feeling out of sorts, or simply uncoordinated, may be an issue.

Smoking weed also can elevate your heart rate by up to 20% for about three hours after use. This won’t be a big deal for most people on the treadmill – in fact, it could be a good thing – but it’s not so beneficial for high-level athletes who already are used to pushing their heart rate.
