What Does the Future of Legal Marijuana Look Like Under President Trump?

As with much of the coming Trump presidency, it is hard to know exactly what will come of the growing marijuana industry. On the one hand, Trump’s stance seems to leave the door pretty well open to states regulating their own legal marijuana.
On the other hand, much of Trump’s cabinet and political allies on the right side are staunchly against legalization. However, there are a few positive notes that are hard to ignore.
The Industry Is Big
With 29 states currently allowing legal marijuana in either recreational or medical form, the reality is that the industry now employs tens of thousands of people. For a campaign run largely on the platform of job creation, it is hard to imagine that Trump will suddenly shut it down, costing thousands of people their careers.
In addition, states like Colorado and Oregon who have a lot of skin in the game have really benefited from the tax income generated by legal marijuana, and have invested heavily in the systems necessary to manage pot within their state. If Trump were to suddenly reverse his stance on the issue, there is reason to believe these states would fight back.
States’ Rights
Another important piece of the Trump presidency is a desire to deregulate and downsize government in a number of areas. Trump has vocally praised states’ rights and claimed that he would continue to give states more power to handle these things on their own. Of course, it is hard to know whether that is a real promise or if it was part of a larger party platform that plays well with his other small government policies.
The Attorney General
Now, for the downside – Trump’s pick for attorney general is Jeff Sessions. This does pose a threat to the legal marijuana industry in general as Sessions is adamantly against legalization. There is a chance that he could swoop in and shut the whole thing down overnight. We tend to believe there would be extreme backlash for this, and it would be extremely difficult to enforce at this point.
