Fortunately, there have been detailed scientific studies concerning the medical benefits of cannabis going back several decades and offer us a wealth of factual information and test results. In general, the test results are very positive and the medical benefits of cannabis are readily apparent.
Sativa strains are a useful treatment option for a wide variety of common medical conditions which are detailed below.
Common Medical Conditions that Sativas Can Treat
There is scientifically-backed evidence that shows the medical value of cannabis in treating several conditions. With controlled testing being done since 1975, there are more than 100 studies that have been carefully reviewed using clinical trials and careful review of the data. The following overview of the effects of sativa strains of cannabis on various medical conditions is based on reported data that draws on over 10 years of published scientific results. For more about the hard science behind this research see this article.
Spasticity: a symptom of multiple sclerosis, spasticity results in the muscles feeling heavy, overall stiffness, and difficulty in moving. A 2011 study showed that cannabis usage greatly reduced these symptoms. The testing showed that of the 572 patients that took place in the study, 272 reported a decrease in spasticity, spasms, and also had improved sleep quality. Further testing where placebos were interdicted confirmed the initial findings. These results were so promising that they led to Germany approving cannabis as an accepted treatment for spasticity in MS patients.
Cytostatic-induced Nausea and Vomiting: are side effects from certain types of cancer treatment medications. Tests in the 1970s and 1980s showed that cannabis was an effective treatment for these side effects. When directly compared to traditional treatment methods, cannabis performed just as well and, in some cases, exceeded traditional options. These long-standing successful tests resulted in cannabis being classified as a reserve medicine for nausea and vomiting caused by cytostatics.
Anorexia and Cachexia in HIV/AIDS Patients: is caused by a simple lack of appetite. One well-known effect of sativas is they cause hunger in the user. A six-week test involving 139 HIV patients was performed to measure the effect cannabis use had on their weight. A double blind test involving placebos yielded positive results. Among those using cannabis, their weights stayed the same while those in the placebo group reported weight loss. These results are very promising for any ailment that reduces appetite such as Alzheimer’s and tumor diseases as well as for HIV and AIDS patients.
Chronic Pain: can be caused by a multitude of conditions and ailments. When clinically tested, cannabis is shown to greatly reduce chronic (neuropathic) pain. A test involving 50 patients suffering from chronic pain brought on by HIV showed that 52 percent reported a notable reduction in pain. Similar reports were also recorded in a clinical test involving patients whose chronic pain was caused by MS. Smaller trials show that cannabis may also prove effective in reducing pain brought on by other illnesses such as rheumatism and fibromyalgia. In general, results show cannabis can decrease chronic pain symptoms.
Other Notable Results: smaller scale testing has shown positive medical results when using cannabis in the treatment of tics caused by Tourette’s Syndrome, bladder dysfunction, and levodopa-induced dyskinesia caused by Parkinson’s disease. Other ailments have also been reported as being positively-affected by cannabis use, however, these studies were in a non-controlled environment and more exact testing is required to come to a concrete conclusion.
Side Effects
When using any medication, the user should understand its side effects. Sativa has the common side effects associated with other cannabis plants. These include:
- Memory can be a little fuzzy as short-term memory is slightly impaired.
- Motor skills and overall cognitive functions are reduced.
- Perception of the passage of time is impaired or inaccurate.
- In some cases, feelings of anxiety have been reported.
While not considered side effects, per se, the feelings of relaxation, heightened perception, and euphoria are additional effects outside of the realm of medical treatment. It is worth noting that most subjects in medical trials reported these effects as quite enjoyable.
